Your Newborn baby girl can have vaginal bleeding.
Here’s why and what to do.
This is probably one of the things you don’t expect as a parent until you see it.
You get your baby girl all set-up for a diaper change and you notice something other than the usual ‘pee’ or poop’ diaper; huh! specks of blood?
It can be very be scary, but this is normal.
This is called “false menses” and typically occurs in girls.
Happened to my daughter too. I was a Pediatrician by then I had her so I was less scared.
I posted a video of this on tiktok (follow me (@dr_norajiaka) if you are there too) and was surprised at the number of people who hadn’t heard of it too.
Why does it happen?
When a mother is pregnant, baby is exposed to mother’s hormones (in this, case estrogen). After the baby is born, that exposure to hormones from the mother stops. and a a result there is what we call “hormonal withdrawal.”.
The hormone drop-off and withdrawal causes a little shedding of the baby’s uterine (endometrial) lining; causing the vaginal bleeding you may see on the diaper.

When does it occur and how long does it last?
It occurs within the 1st week of life. It is typically a few specks or about a spoon of blood. Not every newborn girl experiences this.
The vaginal bleeding or discharge lasts for approximately 1-4 days
What do I do?
The vaginal discharge/ bleeding resolves on its own as your baby’s body gets used to all the hormone withdrawal.
Clean the genital area as you usually would- with a clean cloth or wipe. Remember to always wipe from front to back to prevent infections
Observe to make sure bleeding is not too heavy and that it’s not lasting longer than 3-4 days.
What if it lasts longer or gets heavier?
Contact your Pediatrician for further evaluation.

Nice insight on the vaginal bleed. Didn’t experience this with my daughter. I am sure I would have been really scared if I did. Good knowledge to extend to other mums
Hi Onyinye,
Glad you found it useful. Definitely a common scare.
